I really like the family farm type dog. I grew up with a yellow lab named Leroy, and he was as laid back as they come. My parents now have a chesapeake bay retriever named Pedro, and he is wonderful, too. I like calm dogs. Now I'm married and have a little girl, and we have a black lab named Bullet. We rescued him when he was found outside our small town with a bullet in his leg. He is a wonderful dog, has really nice manners, and is good around babies and new people. My husband loves collies, so we will probably buy a collie puppy when our daughter gets a little older. I always said there's something wrong with a person who dislikes dogs and children. And it never hurts to like horses, too!

my favorite breed is far and away collies. they are incredibly intelligent, very sensitive and loyal. one thing i really like about collies is that collies have a tendency to not run or travel away from their homes. collies have an instinct to "keep tabs" on their family, so they tend to stick pretty close to your side, so you don't have to worry as much about them running like some breeds like to (labs, australian shepards, etc) however, this instinct also seems to make them pretty nervous. i used to have a night job where i wouldn't get home until midnight or later, and my collie would often refuse to come into the house until i got home. rain or shine he was anxiously waiting outside in the yard. you'll never find a better kids dog or better companion than a collie.

I LOVE dogs!! Pretty much every dog. I have three dogs because I love them so much. :) I've had dogs all my life. With all the fantastic dogs that I've had there is one dog that has out-shined all others; my Shih Tzu, Darth Vader. Vader is by far the most precious creature ever to walk the Earth. He's small for a shih tzu but 100% love. He might not be the brightest dog, but where he lacks smarts he more than makes up for it with cuteness and love. Every day I come home I know that Vader will be there with his gigantic brown eyes waiting for me. He's possibly the best part of day. He doesn't bark and is very mild. People are always amazed at temper of Vader. He's pretty much the coolest dog around. :)

I think dog rescue is wonderful :) . I am a high school science teacher and my students are currently doing animal projects. We were talking about how to promote better pet ownership etc the other day and we came up with a T-shirt slogan idea...we thought the shirts could say:
"Puppies happen...be a responsible pet owner" (on the front)...and...
"Spay and Neuter your pets" (on the back)

We're not really going to do it, but at least it got the kids thinking a little bit.

I love Boxers, too! Sophie was part of our family for 14 years. What a kind and loyal friend! : ) She's been gone for four years and my eyes still get misty when I think about her! We now have a White German Shepherd named Koti, who is also a great dog. She acts protective, but is really very gentle. When the time comes for us to get another dog, we plan on finding one at a shelter. Pat on the back to you for teaching your students about spaying and neutering!! :)

how old is your golden? my wife and i gave my brother and his wife a 6 week old golden retriever for their wedding gift, he has grown to be the biggest golden any of us - including our vet - has ever seen. he also was crazy for about the first 3 years, but he's calming down a little now. he's a nice dog, i think about all of the golden retrievers are.

that dog looks a little like a newfoundland, does it also look like a great pyranese?

it's a livestock guardian dog much like the great pyranees bred to loook like a sheep so that it could surprise predators or rustlers. It differs from the pyr in it's size and temperament. it's much smaller and lankier, it also produces lanolin which the pyr does not. it comes from the mountains of italy, where it is still used for it's breeds purpose exclusively. In western countries such as america and australia it hits a medium of both flock guard and companion animal. It's not a dog for novice owners as it's incredibly intelligent and views it's owner as more as a partner than an alpha, so it isn't always quick or willing to obey if it sees a better option, it's not the kind of dog that just rolls over and takes it either. it will bond with anything it grows up with, and protect it with its life, so it makes it the perfect house protection dog. I love them and plan to breed in th coming years, as i believe australia needs more maremmas.
