Note from Chris Tischer, CEO of Liverystable.net on why he chose trainer Kevin Wescott for
the advice section of the site:
I married a woman and her horses when I was thirty-one. My wife grew up on a Nebraska
Sandhills cattle ranch and couldn't understand why I didn't just hop on a horse and
know everything that she had known since she was four. I soon realized that my new
found passion for horses was tempered and contradicted by an uncertainty that at times
even led to fear. I immersed myself in books and television programs that were supposed
to help people like you and me, people who want safer, more rewarding experiences with
our horses. After a few months, frustrated and more confused than when I started, I
announced I was considering spending an obscene amount of money going to a week-long
clinic, when my wife (finally!) remarked "...well Kevin Wescott could teach you more
than any of those guys anyway". I had heard my wife talk about their neighbor back in
Nebraska who helped them with colts and problem horses. However, I had always envisioned
your typical "whip 'em and spur 'em" cowboy type. When she explained that he was a
trainer like the ones I was watching on television, I was excited about the prospects
of meeting him.
When finally introduced to Kevin, in less than an hour he had me working with a horse
and I discovered that he was NOT like everyone on television. Kevin was not interested
in putting on a show, he didn't have catch phrases or gimmicks, he didn't have to
bully or cajole the horse, or drop names to his audience to appear like he had all
the answers. What he was interested in was horses and their riders and making sure
that both were safe and successful during each ride. What he does is simple and
straight-forward, communicated in an easily understood, soft-spoken way. This makes
the rider understand more of what's being said and want to know more, and makes the
horse attentive and appreciative of the way it's being handled.
Nowadays, many horse trainers have become too focused on clichés, short-cuts, name
dropping and their own pocket-books, instead of truly teaching people to become better,
safer riders. Kevin Wescott hasn't lost touch with the real key to horse training -
understanding the horse - and he has an understanding most
people on this earth can only dream about, coupled with a unique ability to effectively
teach others his simple style of horsemanship. Kevin has always been generous with his
knowledge among his friends and the lucky ones who have already discovered him and his
clinics. Now we are happy to offer you the same opportunity to discover and learn.
Kevin does not pay us for the exposure he gets on this site; we
believe his information is too valuable. We hope that you enjoy his advice and we
encourage you check the "Events" section of Liverystable.net for information about
his clinics and visit his website.
