These are actual accounts of horse owners and trainers who know Kevin Wescott personally and have watched him work with horses and people:

The first time I saw Kevin, he had just been handed a horse that had an "issue" with being bridled. Typically it took three people to get a bridle on the animal.  In my years of training show horses, I'd sometimes come upon this problem and I was interested to see how this cowboy would correct it. I watched and waited for Kevin to begin. He didn't. He just stood there with that horse, petting it some, maybe tossing the lead rope around a little.  All the while he was chatting with the people sitting on the fence, telling them cowboy stories, seemingly oblivious to the fact that he was meant to be working on this horse's problem. After about 15 minutes of this I began to wonder if he was ever going to get started, when I saw Kevin remove the horse's halter, pick up the bridle, and without missing a beat in his storytelling, put the bridle on the horse and lead him out of the arena. If I had not personally witnessed this horse give three people the fight of their lives to bridle him in the past, I would never have thought this horse ever had a problem.  He accepted the bit and bridle without so much as a blink of the eye. Kevin had completely eliminated the problem, seemingly without having addressed it at all.

Ray and I met Kevin Wescott through well known horseman Glenn Cudmore. Glenn told us how good Kevin was with his horses and suggested we needed to have Kevin work with our overwhelming numbers of young horses. From the first day that Kevin worked with them we knew that he was a very talented horseman. Warmbloods are not necessarily as easy to work with as other popular breeds and my husband and I are very fussy about who works with our youngsters. We have some very expensive horses and cannot afford to have them started wrong. Kevin has a very unique ability to not only work with the young ones but to correct behavioural problems in older horses. I was also impressed with the fact that Kevin could explain not only what he was doing but why he was doing it. I have been to many sessions with trainers who could not explain why they were doing something. Kevin has obviously spent many years not only learning from the best but becoming one of the best.

"Fella: The (Almost) Lost Cause Horse"
For most of his life Fella was a normal, gentle, good-old-egg of a horse. Then one day he was bought by a man who sadistically abused him for 2 years. He was later rescued by a kind man who tried in vain to bring the horse back to his old trusting ways. But Fella could no longer put his trust in humans. He was now a danger to himself and anyone who tried to handle him. He would bolt in terror at human touch, he would not allow his feet to be picked up and by now his hooves were sorely neglected. His kindly owner had asked me to work with Fella, but despite my years as a professional rider/teacher/trainer I knew the horse was beyond my abilities. At this point it seemed the only heart-wrenching option was to put the horse down...I had heard of Kevin through the stable owner and knew that he was coming to our area soon. I suggested we wait and see if Kevin could help. Kevin came to the stable, was informed of Fella's situation and humbly said he would "see what he could do". I have been trained in the classical hunter/jumper methods for years but to this day I can't tell you how it happened: through Kevin, Fella came around and regained his trust in humans. To watch Kevin work with a horse is like watching a magician. There is a silent conversation taking place between man and horse that is inaudible to all others. All I know is that after an afternoon together, I was watching Kevin trim Fella's long neglected hooves while Fella stood there, unafraid and calm. And today, this horse that was labeled as dangerous and destined for euthanasia, who bore a look of terror in his eyes at the approach of a human, comes up to me when I walk in the pasture and pokes his nose in my pocket looking for treats. The term "horse whisperer" has been over used, over sold and often wrongly applied. There are shylockers who sell gadgets and use hackneyed phrases and more resemble used car salesmen than horsemen. But the original ideal of a person who could "whisper" to horses, who understood them and could ask for and gain their trust is not just a legend. Some few do exist. Many of the popular "natural horsemanship" gurus are not necessarily phonies; they have their talents. But they have let their greed stray them from the original horse whisperers who did not do it for the money or the fame or the glory. But simply because they knew a better way. And they were willing to share their gift with others. Mostly they did it for the horses...Kevin Wescott is one of them.

It is my pleasure to give a recommendation for Kevin and his ability to work with youth and horses. He was at the Rosebud Tribal Fair in 2004 and gave a short demonstration for the rodeo and then spent time with area horse people and their horses. He offered to come back and work with our local youth here on the Rosebud Reservation. This happened this summer when He came and spent the day at the local 4-H horse training working with over twenty youth. During this training he taught many basic skills which allowed the young people to work more effectively with their horses. One senior in high school had never gotten on his two year old but by the end of the day he was riding around the arena and also was able to load the young colt into the trailer much to his parent's surprise. He returned a few weeks later and did a second training for two days. This was also well attended and a valuable experience for the youth as they learned to work in harmony with their horses. One boy and his sister had never ridden a horse but with Kevin’s expertise and encouragement they mounted their borrowed ponies and spent the day learning new skills. One family rode their horses 10 miles to reach the arena to be in the training. Kevin also has a set of DVDs demonstrating his techniques with horses. My 12 year old granddaughter watched the tapes and then went to the round pen and had her horse laying down like Kevin had demonstrated in the DVD. She also tried other techniques taught in the tapes with a great deal of success. The value of Kevin coming and working with has been an opportunity for our community and I would strongly recommend his as an effective horse trainer for native and non native youth.

I have been fortunate to know Kevin Wescott for five years. We run a Non Profit humane society for horses in Illinois called HARPS (Hoofed Animal Rescue & Protection Society). Kevin’s incredible work with our domestic and wild horses has been exceptional. Kevin has tremendous instinct and feel for an animal’s level of acceptance and trust concerning the human. He is a natural when it comes to knowing what an animal needs and just how far to push. He can bring a horse through a difficult situation safely and skillfully while building the animal’s confidence and reducing their fear. Kevin’s work with Elko Dann, the eight-year-old wild mustang rescued from slaughter four months ago in Elko, NV was some of the more miraculous moments that I had an opportunity to witness. Elko had tremendous fear of people other than myself who has trained him since his first day of capture. It was Kevin that was so instrumental in helping to reduce Elko’s fear of other humans by touching him all over, trimming his hooves for the first time, and working side by side with me and Elko on the beach. Kevin helped prepare Elko for his next phase of life as a domestic horse at his new home in Huntington Beach, CA. Elko now allows others to touch him and accepts my dressage trainer upon his back each lesson we take. In my thirty-five years of experience in working and training horses I can confidently state that Kevin is truly one of the finest trainers we have today. Elko and I are fortunate and blessed to have worked with and learned from him.

A woman approached Kevin at the end of his clinic and asked for some advice on how to handle a problem she was having with her horse, who was stabled a few towns away.  Kevin said "It'd be easier if I could show you what to do.  I'll just stop by on my way home from the clinic". In this "horse whisperer" world of gadgets and props and training videos that cost small fortunes, it's refreshing to know that there are still people out there like Kevin, who care more about the horses than the money.

I met Kevin a few years ago when a friend recommended him when I was looking for someone to help me with a problem horse I own.  This horse has some real fear issues and would buck every time we rode him.  Kevin worked with my horse for about a week a then shared with me some techniques on how to work with him. When Kevin found out that I was involved with our county 4-H horse program he volunteered to put on some free clinics for the local 4-H kids, parents and leaders.  Since then he has put on several clinics for the kids.  Last summer he put on a colt starting and horsemanship clinic that was open to anyone wanting to pay for the clinic.  Kevin donated the proceeds from that clinic to our 4-H Horse Committee.  This summer we were able to take some of those funds and give scholarships to two physically handicapped boys to the I Believe in Me Ranch in Kearney, Nebraska.  The ranch helps kids with learning disabilities, behavioral problems and physical handicaps.  Kevin has been a wonderful asset to our community and our kids.

I thought I had acquired all the knowledge and experience I needed to become a horse trainer: a bachelor's degree in Equine Science and riding for Frank Chapot for two years.  Kevin Wescott introduced me to a whole new world of training horses.  I have had the privilege to watch Kevin in action and work with him first hand several times.  His methods are amazing and his influence has helped me drastically with my career as a trainer!
